In this guide

A blank dress offers several possible decorating areas, but gathers, waist seams, and curved panels can limit the usable space. Select the dress and inspect its construction before finalizing artwork dimensions.

Choose the placement first

A small chest monogram, a skirt motif, and an all-over design each place different demands on the garment. Lay a full-size proof on the smallest dress in the order. Keep important details clear of gathers, openings, and seam allowances. Check how the design sits when the dress hangs naturally.

Match the method to the fabric

  • Printing: choose inks or transfers approved for the fiber composition, and work on a flat panel.
  • Embroidery: use a digitized file and stabilizer suitable for the fabric's stretch and weight.
  • Appliqué: consider the combined weight of the base fabric, appliqué material, and stitching.

A delicate knit may not support the same stitch density as a heavier woven dress. Avoid choosing a method only because it worked on a different garment.

Inspect both sides of the decoration

Look for puckering, rough backing edges, loose threads, and stiffness. Check that closures still function and that the skirt hangs evenly. For personalization, verify spelling and the final monogram order on an approved proof before production.

Keep a washed approval sample

Follow the garment label and compatible decoration-care instructions. After washing, inspect shrinkage, shape, color, and the edge of any appliqué. Record the artwork size and its distance from a consistent seam or opening so the placement can be repeated across sizes and future orders.
